Presented in 4K! On May 17th, 2018 BNSF sent a 11 car “Officers Special” down to San Diego, in order to thank their various shippers who use BNSF. This train comes down here on a yearly basis for this exact reason, but it’s never been this long with 11 cars! Originating in Los Angeles, the train deadheaded early in the morning to Fullerton, where the guests boarded the train. The special then followed Amtrak #564 down south along the famous Surfline route. After making a quick stop to pick up more guests at the San Juan Capistrano depot, the special raced down to San Diego.
My chase started in San Clemente, with the breathtaking Pacific Ocean in the background. Since it was going at full passenger track speed, it was difficult catching up to it! Got it again around the Carlsbad Poinsettia area, and once again along the scenic Del Mar Bluffs. Once arrived in Downtown San Diego (seen passing Ash Street), the passengers disembarked with all of their possessions, and the train deadheaded down to the BNSF Yard in Barrio Logan.
Later that afternoon, I caught the special departing the Santa Fe Depot around 7 PM. Also threw in a couple of other shots from the day around San Diego, including BNSF 8025 on the Daygo with a unique K5HLB horn.
Thanks for watching!
